Master the neutral item system to gain critical advantages throughout the game. This comprehensive guide covers all five tier timings, Madstone crafting, artifacts, enchantments, and how to maximize value from neutral items in competitive Dota 2.
5 Tiers • 0:00 - 60:00+
Neutral items are special equipment crafted through the neutral system. Heroes earn Madstone by farming neutral creeps, then use it to choose an artifact and an enchantment from the current unlocked tier. Unlike regular items purchased from the shop, neutral items cannot be bought or sold.
Introduced in patch 7.23 (November 2019), neutral items fundamentally changed Dota 2 strategy by adding periodic power spikes and rewarding efficient jungle farming patterns.
Neutral items create predictable power spike timings throughout the game. Teams that efficiently farm jungle camps, reach Madstone thresholds, and choose fitting artifact-enchantment pairs gain significant advantages, especially around 15:00, 25:00, and 35:00 fights.
Unlocks at 0:00
Tier 1 neutral items are available from 0:00 and provide early-game utility benefits once you collect enough Madstone to craft. These items offer modest stat bonuses, regeneration, or minor active abilities that help during the laning phase and early rotations.
Use early safe camps, pulls, and stacked neutrals to accelerate your first Madstone craft. The first Tier 1 combination can significantly impact early skirmishes and tower pushes.
Unlocks at 15:00
Tier 2 neutral items unlock at 15:00 game time, coinciding with mid-game team fights and objective taking. These items provide noticeable power increases with stronger stats, useful active abilities, and combat-enhancing effects.
Tier 2 unlocks at 15:00, a critical mid-game timing. Secure jungle farm before that minute to have Madstone ready when team fights begin around objectives. The right Tier 2 craft can swing a crucial fight.
Unlocks at 25:00
Tier 3 neutral items unlock at 25:00 game time, during the late mid-game phase when teams are grouping for high ground pushes or defending bases. These items provide substantial stat increases and powerful effects that can determine team fight outcomes.
At 25:00, games are often decided by team fight execution. Ensure cores are ready to craft the best Tier 3 combinations before major engagements. Pick the artifact and enchantment that fit the specific fight scenario.
Unlocks at 35:00
Tier 4 neutral items unlock at 35:00 game time, in the late game when most heroes approach full builds. These items provide powerful late-game effects, massive stat boosts, or game-changing active abilities that can turn the tide of a match.
By 35:00, neutral choices become crucial. Communicate with your team to ensure the most impactful heroes craft the best Tier 4 combinations. A Spell Prism-style effect on a cooldown-dependent hero like Zeus or Leshrac can be more valuable than a generic damage boost on a right-click carry. Adapt based on your win condition.
Unlocks at 60:00+
Tier 5 neutral items unlock at 60:00 game time, reserved for extremely long matches. These are the most powerful neutral items in the game, providing effects equivalent to multiple late-game items. In ultra-late game scenarios, securing the right Tier 5 items can single-handedly win the game.
If the game reaches 60:00, neutral item distribution becomes critical. Discuss with your team which heroes will benefit most. In ultra-late game, a single Tier 5 item on the wrong hero versus the right hero can be the difference between winning and losing. Prioritize items that align with your team's win condition (e.g., if you need to burst an enemy carry, prioritize Fallen Sky on your initiator; if you need your carry to survive, prioritize Mirror Shield or Book of Shadows).
How items are crafted
Modern neutral items are built by pairing an artifact with an enchantment. The artifact supplies the recognizable item effect, while the enchantment adds a secondary stat or utility bonus.
Professional teams plan neutral timing windows around their draft. Know which heroes need the next Madstone craft and which artifact-enchantment combinations are worth delaying a fight for.
Optimize team advantage
Highest priority for damage-scaling and survivability items.
Priority for items enhancing versatility and early impact.
Priority for tanking, initiation, and utility items.
Priority for utility and economy items.
Lowest priority; takes remaining utility items.
Supports should avoid taking items like Paladin Sword or Penta-Edged Sword that scale with core heroes' damage and attack speed. These provide minimal value on supports compared to cores.
Don't evaluate only the artifact name. The attached enchantment can decide whether the item actually solves your hero's problem.
Consider hero-specific synergies. Spell Prism on Zeus is exponentially more valuable than on Sven. Ninja Gear on Phantom Assassin is gamebreaking but mediocre on Crystal Maiden.
Teams lose timing windows by ignoring Madstone progress before 15:00, 25:00, and 35:00. Farm enough safe camps to make the next craft available when it matters.
In professional Dota 2, teams pre-plan neutral priorities based on their draft. Before the game even starts, they discuss which heroes need priority for each tier and which artifact-enchantment pairs fit the win condition. Apply this by discussing neutral plans during the drafting phase or in the first few minutes of the game.
