Attributes Guide
Master Strength, Agility, and Intelligence to optimize your hero's performance
What Are Attributes?
Attributes Definition
Attributes are the fundamental stats that define every hero in Dota 2. The three attributes are Strength (STR), Agility (AGI), and Intelligence (INT). Each attribute provides different benefits and shapes how heroes function in battle.
Every hero in Dota 2 has all three attributes at different levels. These attributes determine your hero's health pool, damage output, armor, mana pool, and more. Understanding attributes is essential for effective itemization and gameplay optimization.
The Three Attributes at a Glance
Strength
Red
Durability, HP, HP regen, magic resistance
Agility
Green
Speed, armor, attack speed, movement speed
Intelligence
Blue
Magic, mana, mana regen, spell amplification
Primary Attribute
Every hero has one primary attribute (STR, AGI, or INT) that provides bonus damage. Heroes are classified by their primary attribute: Strength heroes, Agility heroes, and Intelligence heroes. Universal heroes, a newer category, benefit from all three attributes equally.
Strength (STR)
Strength Attribute
Strength is the durability attribute, providing health points, health regeneration, and magic resistance. Strength heroes are typically tanky frontliners and initiators.
What Strength Provides
Health Points (HP)
+22 HP per point of Strength
Each point of Strength increases your maximum HP by 22. This makes you more durable and able to survive more damage in fights.
Health Regeneration
+0.1 HP regen per second per point
Strength provides passive health regeneration, allowing you to sustain in lane and recover between fights.
Magic Resistance
+0.1% magic resistance per point
Each point of Strength provides a small amount of magic resistance, reducing magic damage taken.
Damage (STR Heroes Only)
+1 damage per point of Strength
For Strength heroes, each point of Strength also provides +1 attack damage, making STR items valuable for both survivability and damage.
Typical Strength Heroes
Tanks & Initiators
- Axe: High STR for durability, uses Berserker's Call to initiate
- Centaur Warrunner: Massive HP pool, powerful STR-scaling abilities
- Tidehunter: Tanky frontliner with game-changing Ravage ultimate
- Underlord: High HP, provides team damage reduction aura
STR Carries
- Sven: Scales with STR, God's Strength multiplies damage
- Wraith King: Tanky carry with Reincarnation (extra life)
- Lifestealer: Gains bonus HP from Feast, very durable
- Alchemist: Farms STR items quickly due to Greevil's Greed
Pro Tip: Strength Scaling
Some heroes have abilities that scale with Strength, making STR items even more valuable. Centaur's Return and Tiny's Tree Grab both benefit from high Strength. When playing these heroes, prioritize STR items like Heart of Tarrasque, Assault Cuirass, and Satanic.
Agility (AGI)
Agility Attribute
Agility is the speed and precision attribute, providing armor, attack speed, and movement speed. Agility heroes are typically carries and high-damage dealers.
What Agility Provides
Armor
+0.167 armor per point of Agility
Agility is the primary source of armor in Dota 2. Armor reduces physical damage taken, making AGI heroes naturally tanky against right-click damage.
Attack Speed
+1 attack speed per point of Agility
Each point of Agility increases your attack speed, allowing you to attack more frequently and deal more DPS (damage per second).
Movement Speed
+0.05% movement speed per point
Agility provides a small movement speed bonus, helping with positioning and chasing enemies.
Damage (AGI Heroes Only)
+1 damage per point of Agility
For Agility heroes, each point of Agility provides +1 attack damage. Combined with attack speed bonus, AGI heroes scale incredibly well with AGI items.
Typical Agility Heroes
AGI Carries
- Anti-Mage: Fast farming carry, scales with AGI for damage and attack speed
- Phantom Assassin: Crit-based carry, high AGI for burst damage
- Juggernaut: Versatile carry with scaling right-click damage
- Terrorblade: Illusion carry, benefits massively from AGI
AGI Assassins
- Slark: Steals AGI from enemies, snowballs with attribute theft
- Riki: Invisible assassin with high damage from backstab
- Bounty Hunter: Track provides bonus gold, scales with AGI items
- Nyx Assassin: Burst damage assassin (actually INT hero, but similar playstyle)
Armor Formula & Damage Reduction
Understanding how armor works is crucial for AGI heroes:
Damage Reduction % = (0.06 × Armor) / (1 + 0.06 × |Armor|) × 100
Each point of armor provides diminishing returns but always increases EHP (Effective HP)
Pro Tip: AGI Item Efficiency
For AGI heroes, buying AGI items is extremely gold-efficient because you get damage, attack speed, armor, and movement speed all from one stat. Items like Butterfly (+35 AGI), Manta Style (+26 AGI), and Eye of Skadi (+25 AGI) provide massive value.
Intelligence (INT)
Intelligence Attribute
Intelligence is the magical attribute, providing mana, mana regeneration, and spell amplification. Intelligence heroes are typically spellcasters and supports.
What Intelligence Provides
Mana Pool
+12 mana per point of Intelligence
Intelligence increases your maximum mana pool, allowing you to cast more spells before running out of mana.
Mana Regeneration
+0.05 mana regen per second per point
Intelligence provides passive mana regeneration, helping you sustain your spell usage over time.
Spell Amplification
+0.07% spell amp per point
Each point of Intelligence increases spell damage and healing by 0.07%, making your spells more impactful.
Damage (INT Heroes Only)
+1 damage per point of Intelligence
For Intelligence heroes, each point of Intelligence provides +1 attack damage, allowing INT heroes to right-click effectively in addition to casting spells.
Typical Intelligence Heroes
INT Nukers
- Lina: High burst damage with Laguna Blade, benefits from spell amp
- Zeus: Global damage dealer, scales with INT and spell amp
- Tinker: Mana-intensive hero that relies on large mana pool
- Skywrath Mage: Pure magic damage dealer with high INT scaling
INT Supports
- Lion: Disabler and nuker, needs mana for multiple stuns
- Crystal Maiden: Provides mana regen aura to team
- Shadow Shaman: Pusher and disabler with high mana costs
- Witch Doctor: Healing and damage, scales with spell amp
INT Carries
- Silencer: Steals INT from kills, becomes incredibly strong late game
- Outworld Destroyer: Right-click carry that scales with INT
- Invoker: Complex spellcaster with numerous INT-scaling abilities
- Storm Spirit: High mobility carry with massive mana requirements
Spell Amplification Explained
Spell amplification increases all magic damage and healing you deal. It stacks additively with other spell amp sources like Kaya and Ethereal Blade.
Spell Amp Calculation Example
Scenario: Lina with 100 INT casting Laguna Blade (725 base damage)
100 INT = +7% spell amp
Kaya = +12% spell amp
Total spell amp = 19%
Final damage: 725 × 1.19 = 863 damage (before reductions)
Pro Tip: Intelligence for Spell Sustainability
Intelligence is valuable even on non-INT heroes for mana sustain. Heroes like Bristleback (STR) or Phantom Lancer (AGI) can struggle with mana, so purchasing INT items like Shiva's Guard or Octarine Core helps with spell spam and sustainability.
Primary Attribute Mechanics
Primary Attribute Bonus
Your hero's primary attribute (STR, AGI, or INT) provides +1 attack damage per point. This is the most important mechanic for understanding hero itemization and scaling.
How Primary Attribute Works
Every hero has one primary attribute that determines which stat provides attack damage. You can identify a hero's primary attribute by the colored highlight on their stats in the hero selection screen.
Strength Heroes
+1 Damage per STR
Strength is their primary attribute. They scale with STR items for both survivability and damage.
Agility Heroes
+1 Damage per AGI
Agility is their primary attribute. They scale with AGI items for damage, attack speed, and armor.
Intelligence Heroes
+1 Damage per INT
Intelligence is their primary attribute. They scale with INT items for mana, spell amp, and damage.
Primary Attribute Strategy
1. Build Your Primary Attribute First
As a general rule, prioritize items that provide your primary attribute. A STR hero buying Heart of Tarrasque (+45 STR) gains +45 damage, +990 HP, and +4.5 HP regen - incredible value.
2. Secondary Attributes Are Still Important
While primary attribute gives damage, don't ignore secondary attributes. A STR carry still needs armor (AGI) and mana (INT) to function effectively.
3. All-Attribute Items Are Gold Efficient
Items that provide all three attributes (like Eye of Skadi +25 all stats, or Ultimate Orb +10 all stats) are extremely efficient because they address multiple needs at once.
4. Attribute Shift Abilities
Some heroes have abilities that modify attributes:
- Morphling: Attribute Shift converts STR to AGI and vice versa
- Slark: Essence Shift steals AGI from enemies
- Silencer: Intelligence Steal permanently steals INT from killed heroes
- Troll Warlord: Berserker's Rage increases base damage based on stats
Damage Calculation Example
Scenario: Sven (STR Hero) with 150 STR, 50 AGI, 30 INT
Strength: 150 × 1 = +150 damage (primary attribute)
Agility: 50 × 0 = +0 damage (not primary)
Intelligence: 30 × 0 = +0 damage (not primary)
Total Attribute Damage: 150
Plus base damage, plus item bonuses like Daedalus (+88 damage)
Universal Heroes
Universal Attribute
Universal heroes are a special hero type introduced in patch 7.33. They gain +0.6 damage from EVERY attribute point (STR, AGI, and INT), rather than +1 from just one primary attribute.
How Universal Heroes Work
Universal heroes don't have a traditional primary attribute. Instead, they benefit from all three attributes for damage, making them incredibly flexible in itemization.
Damage Calculation
Damage from Attributes = (STR + AGI + INT) × 0.6
Every point of any attribute contributes to damage. This means universal heroes scale with all items, not just one type.
Example: Universal Hero with 60 STR, 60 AGI, 60 INT
Total Attributes: 60 + 60 + 60 = 180
Damage from Attributes: 180 × 0.6 = 108 damage
Compare to primary attribute hero: 60 primary + 60 + 60 = only 60 damage from attributes
Universal heroes benefit more from balanced attribute distribution!
List of Universal Heroes
Universal Hero Itemization
All-Attribute Items Are King
Universal heroes benefit massively from items that provide all three attributes:
- Eye of Skadi (+25 all attributes): Provides 15 damage (25 × 3 × 0.6 = 45, then 45 × 0.6 = 27 wait that's wrong...)
- Eye of Skadi (+25 all attributes): Provides (25 + 25 + 25) × 0.6 = 45 damage
- Ultimate Orb (+10 all attributes): Provides (10 + 10 + 10) × 0.6 = 18 damage
- Aghanim's Scepter (+10 all attributes): Provides (10 + 10 + 10) × 0.6 = 18 damage + ability upgrade
Single-Attribute Items Still Useful
While not as efficient for damage, single-attribute items still provide their secondary benefits:
- Heart of Tarrasque (+45 STR): 27 damage + 990 HP + 4.5 HP regen
- Butterfly (+35 AGI): 21 damage + 35 attack speed + 5.8 armor + evasion
- Scythe of Vyse (+35 INT): 21 damage + 420 mana + 1.75 mana regen + disable
Build for Utility and Survivability
Since universal heroes gain less damage per attribute point (0.6 vs 1.0), focus on items that provide utility, survivability, and synergy with your hero's abilities rather than pure damage.
Pro Tip: Universal Hero Flexibility
Universal heroes can adapt their item builds more freely than traditional heroes. If you need armor, buy AGI items. If you need HP, buy STR items. If you need mana, buy INT items. You'll always gain some damage from any purchase, making universal heroes very versatile.
Attribute Gain Per Level
Every hero gains attribute points when they level up. The amount gained varies by hero and is split across the three attributes. Understanding attribute gain helps you predict hero scaling and power curves.
How Attribute Gain Works
Base Attributes + Attribute Gain
Every hero has:
- Base Attributes: Starting STR, AGI, INT values at level 1
- Attribute Gain: How much each attribute increases per level (1-30)
Attribute at Level X = Base Attribute + (Attribute Gain × (Level - 1))
Example: Anti-Mage
Base Stats (Level 1):
STR: 21 | AGI: 24 | INT: 12
Attribute Gain:
+2.6 STR | +3.0 AGI | +1.8 INT per level
Level 30 Stats:
STR: 21 + (2.6 × 29) = 96.4 ≈ 96
AGI: 24 + (3.0 × 29) = 111 (primary attribute)
INT: 12 + (1.8 × 29) = 64.2 ≈ 64
Attribute Gain Categories
High Attribute Gain (3.0+)
Heroes with high attribute gain scale very well into late game through levels alone.
Examples:
- Centaur Warrunner: +4.6 STR/level - Massive HP and damage scaling
- Terrorblade: +4.8 AGI/level - One of the highest AGI gain in the game
- Silencer: +3.2 INT/level + INT steal - Becomes unstoppable late game
- Morphling: +4.1 AGI/level - Scales incredibly well with levels
Medium Attribute Gain (2.0-3.0)
Most heroes fall in this range. They scale moderately with levels and rely on items for power spikes.
Examples:
- Juggernaut: +2.4 STR, +2.8 AGI, +1.4 INT - Balanced gain
- Phantom Assassin: +2.2 STR, +3.2 AGI, +1.5 INT - Good AGI scaling
- Lina: +2.4 STR, +2.2 AGI, +3.2 INT - Solid INT gain
Low Attribute Gain (Below 2.0)
Heroes with low attribute gain rely heavily on items and abilities rather than stat scaling.
Examples:
- Crystal Maiden: +2.0 STR, +1.6 AGI, +3.2 INT - Very fragile, low AGI
- Io: +2.3 STR, +1.6 AGI, +1.8 INT - Doesn't scale well with stats
- Ancient Apparition: +2.4 STR, +2.2 AGI, +2.6 INT - Low total gain
Attribute Gain and Power Curves
Early Game (Levels 1-10)
Base stats matter more than attribute gain. Heroes with high base attributes dominate the laning phase.
Mid Game (Levels 11-20)
Attribute gain starts to matter. Heroes with 3.0+ gain in their primary attribute begin to pull ahead in stats.
Late Game (Levels 21-30)
High attribute gain heroes reach peak power. A hero with +4.0 STR gain has 116 more STR at level 30 than at level 1 (29 levels × 4.0).
Talents Modify Attributes
At levels 10, 15, 20, and 25, heroes can choose talents that often include attribute bonuses:
- Level 10: +8-12 primary attribute OR +150-200 HP/Mana
- Level 15: +15-20 primary attribute OR ability improvements
- Level 20: +20-30 primary attribute OR +15-20 all attributes
- Level 25: +30-50 primary attribute OR game-changing ability upgrades
Choosing attribute talents accelerates your scaling and can be worth more than ability upgrades depending on the game.
Pro Tip: Check Enemy Attribute Gain
Before the game starts, check the enemy hero's attribute gain by hovering over their stats. If you're laning against a Centaur Warrunner (+4.6 STR/level), you know he'll become incredibly tanky by level 10-12. Plan your kill attempts around early levels when his HP is lower.
Items That Give Attributes
Many items in Dota 2 provide attribute bonuses in addition to their active or passive abilities. Understanding which items give which attributes helps you itemize efficiently for your hero's needs.

Early Game Stat Items
Early game stat items provide cost-efficient attributes for laning phase:
Pro Tip: Component Efficiency
When building expensive items, buy the attribute components first (like Ultimate Orb or Reaver) rather than recipe. This gives you immediate stats while saving for the complete item. A 2,050g Ultimate Orb provides +10 all stats immediately, improving your farming speed and survivability.
When to Prioritize Different Attributes
Understanding when to prioritize STR, AGI, or INT beyond your primary attribute is crucial for effective itemization. Your itemization should adapt to the game situation, not blindly follow a guide.
Attribute Priority Decision Tree
When to Prioritize Strength (HP & Survivability)
Build STR items when you need to survive burst damage or long fights:
- Enemy has high burst damage: Lina, Lion, Zeus nukes can one-shot you without HP
- You keep dying in fights: If you're constantly the first to die, you need more HP
- Playing frontline role: Initiators and tanks need STR to soak damage
- Enemy has percentage-based damage: Lifestealer's Feast, Necrophos skills
- Late game insurance: More HP means more room for mistakes
When to Prioritize Agility (Armor & Attack Speed)
Build AGI items when you need armor or attack speed:
- Enemy has heavy physical damage: Phantom Assassin, Sven, Ursa attacks hurt without armor
- You have low armor: Most INT heroes start with 0-3 armor and need AGI items
- Attack speed dependent hero: Heroes with on-hit effects (Void, Weaver, Troll)
- Need to farm faster: Attack speed accelerates farming efficiency
- Kiting and mobility: AGI provides movement speed for chasing/escaping
When to Prioritize Intelligence (Mana & Spell Amp)
Build INT items when you have mana issues or rely on spell damage:
- Running out of mana constantly: Can't cast full combo or spam spells
- Spell-dependent hero: Heroes like Tinker, Storm Spirit, Invoker need huge mana pools
- Want to increase spell damage: INT provides spell amp to boost magic damage
- Need utility active items: Scythe of Vyse, Shiva's Guard are INT items with powerful actives
- Cooldown reduction builds: Octarine Core (INT) for ability spam
Attribute Balance Strategy
1. Address Your Weaknesses
If you're a STR hero with low armor, consider AGI items (Assault Cuirass). If you're an AGI hero with low HP, consider STR items (Heart of Tarrasque). Balance is often better than extreme specialization.
2. Matchup-Specific Itemization
Adapt to the enemy lineup:
- Heavy Magic Damage: BKB (STR), Pipe of Insight, magic resistance items
- Heavy Physical Damage: Armor items (AGI), Ghost Scepter, Ethereal Blade
- Lockdown/Control: Manta Style (AGI) for dispel, Linken's Sphere for spell block
- High HP Enemies: Percentage damage (Diffusal Blade), armor reduction
3. Timing-Based Itemization
Common Itemization Mistakes
Mistake: Ignoring Survivability
Building only damage items as a carry without any HP/armor.
Fix: Even AGI carries need HP. Buy Heart of Tarrasque or Satanic after your damage items.
Mistake: Buying Only Primary Attribute
STR hero buying only STR items without addressing armor or mana.
Fix: Buy Assault Cuirass (armor) or Shiva's Guard (mana + armor) to round out your build.
Mistake: Copying Pro Builds Blindly
Following a guide without adapting to the enemy lineup.
Fix: If the guide says Butterfly but the enemy is all magic damage, buy BKB instead.
Mistake: Neglecting Mana on Non-INT Heroes
STR or AGI heroes running out of mana and can't use abilities.
Fix: Buy items like Shiva's Guard, Soul Ring, or Arcane Boots to address mana issues.
Role-Specific Attribute Priorities
Position 1 (Carry)
Priority Order: Primary Attribute → Survivability (HP/Armor) → Utility
Carries need damage to win fights, but also need to survive to deal damage. Balance offense and defense.
Position 2 (Mid)
Priority Order: Primary Attribute → Mobility → Survivability
Mid heroes need to be active and mobile. Blink Dagger and Force Staff are common even on carries.
Position 3 (Offlane)
Priority Order: Survivability (STR/AGI) → Utility → Primary Attribute
Offlaners prioritize being tanky and providing utility (Pipe, Crimson Guard, auras) over pure damage.
Position 4/5 (Supports)
Priority Order: Mana (INT) → Survivability → Utility
Supports need mana to cast spells and items to survive (Ghost Scepter, Glimmer Cape, Force Staff).
Pro Tip: Item Flexibility
The best players constantly adapt their item builds based on how the game is going. If you're losing fights, buy survivability (STR, armor). If you're winning, buy damage to snowball harder. If you're neither ahead nor behind, buy utility items (Scythe, Shiva's) that help your team win fights regardless of net worth.
